This is Lauren from Appalachian State University. She spent her Spring Break in Nicaragua and painted this lovely mural in our school library. The mural is in the traditional Latino folk-art style and has been very popular with our schoolchildren at Centro Educativo Nueva Generación who gather around it and wonder why the snails and chickens are so huge (ok, that's an inside joke...I consistently gave poor Lauren a hard time about the huge animals). But, it is indeed a beautiful piece of art, and we deeply appreciate her and the ASU Lutheran group who came and brightened our school.

This is Michelle Bachelet, the new president of Chile. She's the first woman to be elected president in Latin America on her own merits, and she represents, I believe, a new hope for both leadership and democracy in this hemisphere.
Some of Madame President Bachelet's plans for her first 100 days in office include:
- We will require that everyone studying to be an English teacher must study abroad for one semester in an English-speaking country; we will offer state financing for this.
- We will create an exchange program so that more teachers from English-speaking countries can come and teach in Chile.
- We will create a program to allow the top 1,000 graduates of Chilean universities every year to study for doctorates in the best universities in the world.
Also,
We will appoint a Minister of the Environment for the first time in Chilean history.
