Last night while in downtown Monterrey I encountered a demonstration in support of what's happening in the Mexican state of Oaxaca where 70,000 striking teachers have been marching and blocking the streets since June. Four days ago Federal police cracked down on the city and in the ensuing melee eight people were killed - including 2 U.S. journalists. This federal crackdown has sparked protests and demonstrations in other cities across Mexico.
We are living in Durango and we have not seen any protests here. However last week when we were visiting Mexico City we saw two marches for Oaxaca. The police cleared the streets for the marches to go by. It was quite civil. Very different to the protests I have seen in the U.S.
