I knew it! Stopping at a stoplight here is usually accompanied by a host of people surrounding your car - lean, rough looking men trying to wash your windshield, kids juggling, women selling newspapers, other men selling things like peanuts or trinkets, and beggars. Often the beggars are crippled people and, naturally one feels sorry for the sad condition these people have been stuck with, and so people are much more likely to give a few pesos to a crippled person. That being said, this morning I saw this story in the headline news: Police: Mexican Woman in Wheelchair Flees on Foot (very short article - read it!) and it made me laugh.
I recently watched "Slumdog Millionaire" which included a scene where people in India sometimes maim children so their begging will be more effective.
The world is fallen.
