Swimming Lessons
Over 80 people drowned at the beaches during Semana Santa. I was thinking it would be a great humanitarian thing if some groups could come down this way and bring portable swimming pools and offer lessons to the people. The only place they really have to learn how to swim is the ocean or the big lakes, how difficult is that?
Moving idea. I still struggle swimming, even after many lessons, all as an adult.

David,
Was it just because you never had a good place to swim? What would have helped you?

not really a part of my growing up culture. We hardly went to the ocean. And yes, that was the only place to 'learn' how to swim and so my parents didn't want that for me. Not many places have swimming classes, in a pool at a school.

what is "Semana Santa" and are people drowning in the ocean? learning to swim in ocean water is far different than splashing around in a concrete swimming pool.

Semanta Santa is "Holy Week" and is what they call Easter. It's one of the biggest holidays here and is really just a week of partying for lots of people. While the majority of those drownings no doubt took place in the Pacific I'm sure the lakes (Lake Managua & Colcibolca) claimed their share as well. I learned to swim in a concrete swimming pool and never had any problems with the ocean. I think the key is using good judgment and probably not getting drunk before going into the water (the untold reality behind many of those unfortunate deaths to be sure).
